Joy Ride Storyline

The plot concerns Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker), a young man who decides to go cross-country to pick up his high school sweetheart, Venna Wilcox (Leelee Sobieski), from college. On his way there, he bails his brother, Fuller Thomas (Steve Zahn), out of jail. Fuller, looking for a good time, decides to ride with Lewis. During their trip to pick up Venna, Fuller coaxes Lewis into playing a cruel joke, through their CB radio, on a truck driver, known only as 'Rusty Nail' (voiced by Ted Levine). When the joke takes a deadly turn, Lewis, Venna, and Fuller find themselves being relentlessly stalked by the psychotic truck driver who is looking for more than an apology.

Joy Ride trivia

Although 'Ted Levine' (qv) provides Rusty Nail's voice, he actually wasn't brought in until post-production, and, physically, Rusty Nail is played by the hulking actor 'Matthew Kimbrough' (qv).
Three different versions of the ending were shot.
During the opening credits, when the camera pans around 'Paul Walker (I)' (qv)'s room, a toy model of the car is visible on the dresser.
To avoid the unpleasant effects of having to remove Scotch tape from 'Leelee Sobieski' (qv)'s hair and skin after the take, she was tied up with a strong, thick plastic film (like thick Saran Wrap) which looked like tape and stuck almost like tape, but which was glueless, making its removal simple and fuss-free.
The speaking voice for 'Rusty Nail' was provided by 'Ted Levine' (qv), most famous for portraying 'Buffalo Bill' in _The Silence of the Lambs (1991)_ (qv).

Joy Ride goofs

CONT: It's mentioned twice in dialogue that Lewis is attending college in Berkeley. However, his plane ticket is from Los Angeles to Newark.
PLOT: When Lewis and Fuller hear Rusty Nail on the radio asking for Black Sheep and Mama's Boy and realize he knows they are behind the prank, Fuller calls Rusty Nail "Russell" on the CB. Nowhere in the movie/additional scenes/commentary is the name "Russell" mentioned as a name for Rusty Nail, so there is apparently no way that any of the characters could have known Rusty Nail's name.
FAKE: Just before Rusty Nail crashes through the ice truck, the cable used to pull the truck apart can be seen being dragged behind it.
CONT: Although the car has two seats up front. Fuller is in the passenger seat sitting next to the window. But when the three pull out of the truck stop, Lewis is sitting in the middle of the front right next to Venna.
CONT: After the teens have the broken tail light on their car fixed, they pull over by a corn field following Rusty Nail's instructions and the tail light is not working again.
